I am going to focus on creating a simple printable for this tutorial. A printable can be anything from an inspirational quote or checklist to goal-setting worksheets – all designed to provide a usable solution for your audience.
I will show you how to create a basic checklist from scratch, and some bonus tips to customize it and make it pretty. Let’s dive in!
Step-by-Step Guide to Create a Checklist from Scratch in Canva with Bonus Over the Shoulder Video Tutorial
Step 1: If you don’t have an account in Canva, you can sign-up for a free account at www.canva.com
Step 2: Log into Canva and select “Create a Design”. Choose the right dimensions for your printable from the drop down menu such as Letter Size or A4, or use the custom dimensions. Hot Tip: I like to use US Letter, 8.5in by 11in for printables in the USA. This makes it easy for your readers to print out. If you are not in the USA, you may want to select the best size for your country.
Step 3: Click on ‘Text’ in the menu on the left hand side of your screen. Add a Text Box and use it for the title of your checklist.
Step 4: Add Check-Boxes. Select ‘Elements’ from the menu on the left hand side of the screen. Search for a square outline, and add it to your page by clicking on it.
Step 5: Grab the corner of the square on your page to resize it. Position it where your first line item for the checklist will be.
Step 6: Copy the checkbox by selecting it and either selecting the ‘Duplicate’ option or pressing CTRL-D.
Step 7: Position the checkboxes on the left side of the page, and then clean up the spacing and alignment. You can do this by holding the left mouse button down and selecting all the boxes. Then click on “Position” at the top right of your screen and select ‘Tidy-Up’.
Step 8: Add lines next to each text box. To do this, go to the menu on the left hand side of the screen and select ‘Elements’. Click on a plain line to add it to the page. Then click on the line you just added to adjust the thickness and type of line using the options on the top left of the screen.
Step 9: Copy as many lines as you need, then select all of lines the same as you did for the boxes in Steps 6-7. Hot tip: Place a line where you want the last line item to be, and then select and tidy-up all of the lines. This will space them evenly from the top line to the bottom line.
Step 10: When you are ready, download your design as a PDF Print document. Simply click ‘Share’ on the top right of the screen for a drop down menu. Select ‘Download’, and then select ‘PDF Print’ for the file type. This will download the .pdf document to your computer.
