How to Make a Vision Board (And Why)
Have you heard about the power of vision boards to get your dream life, and how to make one from a vision board template or from scratch?
Hey there busy parents. Do you sometimes feel you are just going through the motions everyday? Doing the same things like getting ready in the morning, going off to work and school, coming home, making dinner and getting ready for bed.
If you feel like you are in a deep, boring, rut and will never get out, you are not alone. Many people go through phases like these in life.
A vision board may be just the thing to get you excited and fired up about your life again.
We have all heard visualization works really well to help us reach our goals. Visualization techniques are used by pro-athletes, successful business people, and many others to work towards achieving the life they want.
Why is this a good idea? It’s a good idea because we all have a dream life, and this is one tool that can help you visualize that life and set goals to get there. It will get your creative juices flowing so you can start working towards achievable goals to get you closer to a life you want.
“If you don’t design your own life plan, chances are you’ll fall into someone else’s plan. And guess what they have planned for you? Not much.
Jim Rohn

According to dictionary.com, a vision board is: “a collage of pictures, text, and other items that represent and affirm one’s dreams and ambitions, created to help visualize and focus on one or more specific aspirations: Everything on her vision board points to a career in pediatric medicine.“
All this means is you make a physical or digital board to post images and text that represent your big dream for your life, and how you are going to get there.
For instance, let’s say you want a promotion at work.
1. Think about the steps you need to take to get the role you want.
2. Set actionable goals for that, and put images and text on your board to reflect the journey to get there (and keep you motivated!).
3. Items you could include on your board could be a picture of your dream work space or office, motivational or inspirational quotes, pictures that represent each step to reaching the next goal, and maybe a paycheck with the amount of money you could make.
Then you would put this board somewhere you will see it regularly to motivate you to keep working towards that dream, and reflect how far you’ve come.
“The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.”
Eleanor Roosevelt
What Should a Vision Board Include?
A vision board should include pictures of specific people or places, text with affirmations or inspiring quotes, and anything other items that represent your goals and dreams, and will help you stay motivated to get there.
“Nothing is impossible, the word itself says ‘I’m possible’ ” !

Vision Board Categories
Where you want to be in your life and how you are going to get there are very personal decisions. However, I know how difficult it can be to know where to start. Getting started is often the hardest part.
Begin by choosing one or more categories for the area of your life you want to work on. There is typically one category per board. Create as many vision boards as you like.
Here are the most common categories with an example image of a digital vision board for inspiration. These vision boards were created using templates in Canva, which is my favorite graphic design software. They have a free version, loads of templates so you don’t have to start from scratch, and you can upload your own photos and images.
Professional Life / Career

What do you want for your career? This board is the place to put items that represent what you want. Some ideas are how much money you want to make, a picture of your dream job or company you want to work for, team environment or your own office, etc. Maybe you are thinking about a career change. If that is the case you could add pictures or flyers from the university or school to get educated, pictures of people from that career, and more.
Health

Remember, this could be your physical or mental health (or both). Perhaps you want to get more exercise so you post pictures of people playing a sport or going for a walk. For mental health, perhaps it is learning how to meditate. Whatever your health goals may be, this is the place to get them out and work toward them.
Family

What do you want your family life to be like? Maybe you want more time with your kids, family dinners, to play sports together or go for a walk every night. Perhaps you have thought about adding a new pet into the mix. Put items that inspire you to get to get the family life you are dreaming of.
Lifestyle

This is a fun category. It is all about the way you live your life, and how you want your lifestyle to be. Do you want to change up your style of clothes, hair, and/or makeup? Start working out regularly. Drive a new car? Redecorate your home or get a new home? Anything you can think of about the way you live your life falls in this category. Add items about the lifestyle and how you will get there to keep you motivated.
“The secret of getting ahead is getting started.”
Mark Twain
Digital or Physical?
You have a couple of options to create your vision board.
- Physical Vision Board: If you have room in your home or office you could create a vision board and keep it in a location you will see it frequently. You could also create a digital one to print out and keep in your planner, notebook, or on your wall. This will keep you motivated!
- Digital Vision Board: If you don’t have enough room to set up a vision board, want it to be more private, or even just want to be able to see it whenever you want then a digital board is a good choice. It doesn’t take up any space in your home or office and you can pull it up and look at it whenever you want.
Get Started with a Vision Board Template
You may be wondering why you would need a template? A template will save you a lot of time because the layout is already done for you. This leaves you with more time for the important stuff like making goals and finding the perfect items to put on your board.

Make Your Vision Board
Now comes the fun part. Putting together your vision board.
Physical Vision Board – you will need to decide on a size and go from there. Common materials are a cork board with push pins to hold items, poster board, magazine clippings, printed material with quotes, affirmation cards, photos, photo safe glue, stickers, markers, and anything else you would like to use. Use your creativity to make a board you will love. Scapbooking and stationary supplies are also a good way to add a personal touch.
Affirmation Cards are a great thing to add to your physical vision board. Shop now – check out the set below or other sets on Amazon.
Digital Vision Board – You can choose a template from one of the websites above or start from scratch using your preferred software. My favorite graphic design software is Canva at www.canva.com. It is free to use and comes with templates ready for you to customize.
